Eyelid Lift

Best Eyelid Surgery in Seattle and Bellevue

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the eyes. Common reasons patients seek blepharoplasty are for eye puffiness, loose eyelid skin, eye bags, or hollowness under the eyes.  Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper or the lower eyelids.

what is Upper Eyelid Surgery?

Upper eyelid surgery (upper blepharoplasty or upper eyelid lift) treats droopy eyelid skin that makes the eyes look tired and aged. With time, the upper eyelid skin becomes lax and can droop over the eyelid crease and occasionally even impairs vision. The procedure is performed with a small incision that is hidden in the eyelid crease. Excess eyelid skin and fat is then gently removed. The surgery can be performed with the patient awake or under twilight anesthesia.

what is lower eyelid Surgery?

Lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty)  treats puffiness, loose eyelid skin, and lower eye bags. A lower eyelid lift can be performed under twilight anesthesia or with the patient completely asleep. In many cases, fat grafting is performed at the same time as a lower eyelid lift to treat hollowing under the eyes.

What is the Recovery Like after a blepharoplasty?

Surgery is performed in our fully accredited surgical suite. Patients will arrive the day of surgery and leave for home a few hours later. In general, a blepharoplasty is not very painful. Most patients use tylenol for pain control but we also provide prescription pain medication in case something stronger is needed. Patients are able to walk around the day of surgery, but we ask them to avoid heavy exercise for two weeks.

Patients can expect mild swelling and bruising  which usually peaks a few days after surgery and then rapidly improves.

Frequently Asked Questions

A good candidate for a blepharoplasty has loose eyelid skin, eye bags, eye puffiness, or hollowing under their eyes. Patients should be overall healthy without serious heart or lung diseases. Both men and women can benefit from a blepharoplasty. If you have had eye surgery (such as lasix or cataract surgery), you should wait 6 months before having a blepharoplasty.

Fat grafting is a procedure to improve hollowing under the eyelids and smooth the junction between the lower eyelid and the cheek. A small amount of fat is removed from the stomach or thigh. The fat is then purified and small amounts are placed in hollowing under the eyes.  In some cases, malpositioned eyelid fat bags can be repositioned instead of  being completely removed which may make fat grafting unnecessary. Dr. Scott will evaluate you to determine if you would benefit from fat grafting or fat repositioning at the time of your eyelid lift.

In general, an eyelid lift is a safe procedure and most patients heal without issue. However no procedure is completely without risk. Some of the main risks of a blepharoplasty include dry eye, scarring, asymmetry, and malposition of the lower eyelid. Overall, complications are rare and most problems typically resolve completely with time.
